RTÉ and Saorview partner with Freesat to deliver a next-generation product for Irish audiences
20 January 2016

RTÉ has partnered with Freesat, the UK free-to-air television company, to develop a new product for Saorview, Ireland’s free digital television service and the largest television platform in Ireland*. The new product, called Saorview Connect, will allow viewers to access a range of on demand content as well as the Saorview television channels, all integrated in a new set-top box with a range of additional features.

Important Notice for customers who currently receive their TV service through MMDS

Why is this happening?

MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System) is a broadcast TV platform that Virgin Media (then UPC) acquired when it purchased both Chorus (2004) and NTL in 2005. This enabled the provision of TV to customers outside of our cable network.
MMDS is offered in the 2.6Ghz spectrum band and is provided under a 2.6Ghz spectrum licence granted by ComReg (the Commission for Communications Regulation).
From April 18th this licence will expire and this means we’ll no longer be able to bring our MMDS TV service to MMDS customers.
To help you find an alternative provider for TV services we have listed some companies which allow you to compare what alternative services are available.

Choose your viewing with Red Button on Saorview

TG4 and Saorview have teamed up again to make sure you don't miss out on this weekend's Rugby action.

With two Guinnness PRO12 matches back to back this Friday 29th April, we're lighting up the Red Button so that you can choose between the excitement of Benetton Treviso V Connacht starting at 6.15 or the later battle between Munster and Edinburgh that kicks off at 7.30. The second half of the Connacht match will be viewable via the Red Button so that each team's followers will be able to choose which game to watch in its entirety.

Red Button is just one of the ways in which we plan make your Saorview viewing more exciting in the coming months. We promise to keep you up to date with developments as they happen.  #freethetv

Happy viewing!
